Michael Shurtleff Bio



Michael Shurtleff was born on July 3, 1920, in Oak Park, Illinois. His birth name was Charles Gorden Shurtleff, but he changed his first name to Michael after graduating from Yale University. He passed away on January 28, 2007 from lung cancer.

One of his major achievements was writing his influential book about the audition process entitled Audition: Everything an Actor Needs to Know to Get the Part. He is was a prominent casting director for Broadway and film in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the main casting director for producer David Merrick. Shurtleff went on to form his own casting service in 1962 called Casting Consultants.

Shurtleff also wrote many plays - one-acts and full-length. His best remembered play is Call Me By My Rightful Name.
